A Brexit regret

Brexit has been a total disaster, is the recent media narrative. Only a fool could think otherwise.

The press always made an artificial divide between Leavers and Remainers, as if everyone had very staunch positions either way.

More likely, most who gave it consideration could see the case for staying in the EU – a safety first, don’t rock the boat vote. And also thought there was something to be said for freedom from Brussels.

It was a marginal call for many of us, not a position of certainty.

Anyway, we’ve definitely got Brexit Buyers’ Remorse, if we believe what we read.

For our Find Out Now poll this week we thought we would check if that’s true.

We asked more than 2000 “leave” voters: To what extent do you regret voting for Britain to leave the EU in the 2016 referendum?

Well, 69% say “not at all”, which doesn’t suggest sweeping remorse. Though you could turn it the other way around and say one in five regret their Brexit vote, which would have been enough to reverse the result last time.

We also then asked those who did regret voting to leave why that was so.

The main reasons are to do with Brexit’s failure to make us richer, particularly in the North East. Older voters most regret that the Brexit vote doesn’t seem to have cut immigration.

Press release of the day

Are we going to cut loose this Christmas or cut back? This from Life Search Health says we will look to spend much less, with women in particular “close to breaking point” financially.

Londoners will spend £1.6 billion less over Christmas, they estimate. We will spend less on food and drink. Kids will get fewer presents.

Stories that will keep rolling

1) Are loan sharks circling vulnerable consumers?

2) When will the Bank of England start to cut rates, rather than increase them?

3) Which other Premier League football clubs are up for sale?
