The flak, the hack and the exaggerated sporting abilities

Home Tomorrow's Business The flak, the hack and the exaggerated sporting abilities

A few years ago a senior sports businessman made the mistake of bragging to a reporter about his cricketing prowess.

To his misfortune both the reporter and a mate of his — me — really had played for the youth teams in which he was claiming to have starred.

Since we didn’t remember him, and surely would have, we checked his claim. Rumbled.

The boot went in. Flaks involved at the time still shake their heads at the memory of the pain they endured trying to weasel out of this one.

Today, shopping centres Intu and Hammerson announced a merger.

Someone on the deal was heard to big-up the merits of the Broadmarsh shopping centre in Nottingham as an example of the prime properties the new company will oversee.

Unfortunately, hacks from Nottingham, who have a, erm, different experience of the joys of the Broadmarsh, heard him.

In some ways, this stuff is a bit of a laugh. For hacks, it does raise the question of what else being said is questionable, if not entirely untrue.

These things will bite you on the bum when you least expect it.
