How to Pitch and Remain GDPR Compliant

Home PR Insights How to Pitch and Remain GDPR Compliant

Discover how to keep in line with great GDPR practices for PRs

Staying GDPR compliant when pitching to journalists is key to building relationships and getting featured. Roxhill gives you all the tools you need to make sure you’re targeting the right journalists and not sending out unwanted emails.

We’ve read through the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and condensed it to give you our top ten tips on how to target journalists with a “legitimate interest”.

In case you missed it...

‘Legitimate Interest’ is the principle on which data is shared in Roxhill; because of that, you MUST ONLY contact a journalist with relevant information.

There is a legitimate relationship/interest between PRs and journalists, and, as such, PRs do not need to seek permission to hold the personal data of each journalist. But, before engaging with journalists, PRs do have to have assessed the Lawful Basis they are using under GDPR to process data. This needs to be documented in their publicly available Privacy Policy

Your approach must be tailored to the journalists’ needs. A generic press release sent to every media correspondent will be an instant delete. As a PR, you need to be able to describe why you have a legitimate relationship in your ‘Privacy Policy’.

In a nutshell, what you send to a journalist has to be relevant

In order for your communications to be classed as lawfully relevant, they must be relevant to:

  • them
  • what they write about
  • their professional interests
  • the publication they write for, and
  • the audience they serve
