Late plays for coronation weekend

Most publications, or at least their digital pages, will have long cemented plans for the forthcoming coronation weekend (if you haven’t heard, it involves a man sitting on a chair and putting some jewellery on).

Most of these will, I presume, be written in-house, but I can guess what they’ll involve. A guide to where to see the coronation, with a focus on (no doubt quadrupled) London hotel prices. Special coronation-themed packages in other cities. Perhaps a piece on famous royal locations, or a list of places — such as Transylvania — which are close to King Charles’ heart. Or maybe an article about UK (it’ll be too last-minute for overseas escapes) places with availability where one can definitively escape the fanfare, bunting and bloated TV coverage.

If you’ve got anything which fits these — an off-grid cabin; a London hotel near-ish to Buckingham Palace for less than £200 a night that weekend — and haven’t done so already, it’s worth sending it out far and wide as a shot in the dark.

Otherwise, think about other potential approaches. Do you have a client who could do a study of London hotel prices across the bank holiday? Does Charles have any key passions which match up to someone you represent? If you happen to have a client near Plumpton, in East Sussex, that little-known place was where the Queen Consort was raised — a good hook for the coming weeks.

What I wouldn’t do is try to force it. Don’t pitch coronation weekend escapes unless they are truly escapist. Don’t pitch London hotel stuff if the prices are exorbitant or there’s little availability. And definitely don’t mention Prince Harry.

What Richard Thinks…

“A good solid hook from the dependable Tom Panagos, now thankfully back doing his quality thing at World Expeditions”
