Life in lockdown

Liz Edwards, Commissioning Editor at The Times and The Sunday Times

Each day we speak to a journalist about their new normal.

Today we hear from Liz Edwards, Commissioning Editor at The Times and The Sunday Times.

Where are you working from right now?
The spare room or the kitchen. I'm hot-desking, and hot-homeschooling.

What’s your new morning routine?
Exercise (star jumps, garden laps, puny pressups), shower, breakfast, hot desk. No more hairbrushing since I shaved it all off.

Have you got dressed today?
In a manner of speaking.

How has your working week changed since Covid-19 hit?
There's just as much to do, if not more, as we react to changing situations. But for me at least, daytime opportunities to focus are reduced, so work is seeping into evenings and weekends.

What are the current plans for filling your pages?
We're having to be pretty creative - but readers seem to like what we're doing. We're running a mixture of armchair travel, funnies, human-interest stories, nostalgia, and inspiration and tips for when we can travel again.

What does a work lunch look like these days?
About as salady and/or soupy as it did before. I'm missing Itsu though.

What’s the biggest challenge for your desk/publication right now?
That readers can't get out and travel, and that we don't know when that will change.

Has anything positive come out of this?
It's been good to stop and take stock, to think about what it is travel does for us all. It's shown us what a strong team we are, and we can be proud of how we've adapted and what we've produced.

What’s your top tip for PRs right now?
Be creative yourselves, think laterally and keep the ideas coming. We're all in this together.

What’s your comeback plan?
It feels a bit early for detailed plans. But we're confident that readers' appetite for travel won't disappear while we're locked down - quite the opposite. We'll be ready to satisfy that demand as soon as we're able.
