In Harry Met Sally the film’s central question was could men and a women ever just be friends? I used to wonder the same of a PR and a journalist?
After all, it’s a relationship built on what you do for each other, right?
In the case of PR to journalist it’s information and niceness in the form of trips, samples or dinners. In the case of journalist to PR, it’s coverage. And maybe contacts.
So can there ever be true authentic bond?
Well yes! This week I’ve met lots of PR’s who I now, after twenty years in the industry, consider friends. I know they will continue to support me even I don’t have a major title behind me for a while. They know I will support them even if they lose a prestigious client.
A relationship that is mutually beneficial yes, but genuine nonetheless.
I have also been reminded about the idea-generating power of getting out there. A lunch at The Wolseley with my editor was super productive (and delicious). Plus we got to see Keeley Hawes (I just about stopped my editor from making an approach about a cover). On another day I went to the chicest Chanel lunch celebrating New Year at Harry’s Bar in Mayfair. There I sat next to Kate Phelan, legendary Vogue stylist and Top Shop creative who shared stories of working with Sir Philip and confirmed my theory that the most talented people are also the nicest.
