Think beyond chocolate and lamb

Have you made your heart-shaped, sugar-free pancake yet? It’s a funny old year, this one – when Shrove Tuesday and Ash Wednesday collide with Valentine’s Day. 

No doubt it’s been a challenge to be creative with comms when – even if many outlets and journalists aren’t massively Lent-observant – the sugar-spiked day of romance and the start of 40 days of sacrifice (often sweet treats) are almost combined. 

I’m really not sure that the tenderstem broccoli-infused chocolate I was sent a release about is the way forward, but it has been noteworthy that I’ve had a lot of non-confectionery news from PRs.

I did chuckle at Our Place styling up pots and pans for Valentine’s Day (although I am married to the bloke who once bought me a frying pan on Feb 14 when we were dating); but I’m definitely a fan of Natoora’s ‘radicchio not roses’ campaign. The curious Air Up water bottles that give a blast of ‘flavour’ have tried a sugar-free romance angle while Heinz (see release below) is on a savoury tip, as is the pack telling me that nachos are this year’s hot date food. Hmmm. Give me the Parsons Nose heart-adorned beef wellington over that any day!

I suppose as you PRs and we journos look beyond Valentine’s Day and towards this year’s very early Easter, what I’m after is something more imaginative than Domino’s crème egg cookies (of which I’m bored already). It’s such a big celebration of food but please think beyond chocolate and lamb. 

I’m thinking of a restaurant tour that celebrates the best egg dishes, for a start. We’ve got 39 days from right now!
