In the news last week, first published in the medical journal The Lancet before being widely re-reported everywhere else, came the revelation that more than a billion global people are now living with obesity around the world, with the UK ranking 55th worst for men and 87th for women.

There’s a potential angle here for anyone representing a medi-spa or similar which offers weight-loss breaks; better yet if said place also supplies general living advice geared towards maintaining healthiness afterwards. If your preferred publication can find a podgy journalist willing to a) admit to podginess and b) go on the break, it could work as a personal narrative piece hooked on current news.

I’d recommend approaching a publication, and leaving it to them to find someone if it’s an idea they like, rather than approach a writer yourself. “Dear obese journalist…” Yeahhhh. Best not.

This is a good example of monitoring the news for stories which can play into the travel section. It’s worth doing so every morning, or at least every few days, if you’re not already an avid news reader.

What you’re looking for is either a story with wide reach (i.e. virtually everyone knows about it), or one, like this, which is directly relevant to a lot of people in Britain. And, obviously, in either case, one that leads to a natural travel angle.
